Tired of not fitting into your dream outfit because of having the wrong breast size? Is hormonal imbalance causing your breast size to increase beyond your preferred size options?

Well you aren’t alone. According to a survey conducted by Research Gate on 20,000 women, it was found out that around 70% women were not satisfied with size or the shape of their breasts.

“An ideal breast should be proportionate to the height, shoulder and the waist of the women” says Dr Sood, one of the leading breast surgeons in India who works at Tricity Institute of Plastic Surgery (TIPS).

According to International society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were 33,000 breast augmentation surgeries done in India in 2016.

Breast surgery is typically divided into four broad categories

1. Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is performed to increase the size of breasts by using fat from another part of the patient’s body or using breast implants.  Augmentation mammoplasty is often preferred by women for various reasons. Some women opt for the surgery due to loss of size and shape caused by pregnancy and lactation. And few other women feel their breasts are too small in relation to their body shape and structure. Also some want to correct differences in breast size.

The surgery is completely pain free as the patient is under general anesthesia. Breast implants are usually made of silicone shells which are either filled with saline (salt water solution) or silicone gel. They come in different shapes and sizes and are picked according to the patient’s preferences. These implants are completely safe and can be modified to whatever the patient’s needs are.

The implants are known to cause interference with screening mammography. They also interfere with the detection of cancer and breast compression during mammography. In rare cases this might also cause implants fracture. The implants can be placed over or under the pectoralis chest muscle of the patient through an incision in the axilla (armpit), areola or lower breast.

The incision is made after careful consideration of size and implants are placed either beneath the gland or the muscle depending on the thickness of the overlying skin. The incision will be made in the inframammary crease and results almost unnoticeable scar. It’s a relatively straight forward surgery and most patients are discharged on the same day of the procedure.

2. Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction surgery involves the process of decreasing the size and shape of heavy breasts. Women with breasts that are too large find themselves being self-conscious all the time. Most of them also experiencing neck pain, back pain, heaviness in the bust area, bra strap irritation, skin irritation, numbness or weakness. This surgery can alleviate the above mentioned concerns and involves removal of excess skin, fat and glandular tissue.

During the surgery incisions are made on each side of the breast below the nipple areola complex which connects just above the nipple to a key-hole shaped incision. This leads to elevation of the breast and nipple and patients are required to stay in the hospital for 2-3 days, while the sutures are removed within a week. It may take a while for the breasts to become soft and supple once more. Patients are usually advised to take it easy for the first few weeks and avoid strenuous activity. They are also advised to wear compression garments for the first few weeks.

In rare cases breast reduction surgery may leave extensive scars. It can result in reduces breast contour, volume and appearance. It usually conserves normal breast sensation, nipple-areola sensation and milk production. Its possible side effects are lumpiness from scar tissue and temporary numbness around the nipple-areola area. The resultant breast shape and size are permanent. Patients are usually seen to show an increase in confidence and self-esteem in post op as the anxiety of large breasts is alleviated.

3. Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a procedure most trauma victims and breast cancer patients opt for after a mastectomy. This surgery helps rebuild natural looking breasts according to the patient’s desires and specifications. But due to complete removal or extensive damage of sensory nerves or milk glands and ducts, normal breast sensation and the ability to breastfeed cannot be preserved.

The appearance, contour and volume of the breasts can be remade using breast implants or the patient’s own tissue from another body part. In case where an implant is used, it is often matched with the opposite breast in order to obtain specifications and maintain uniformity in the appearance of the patient. Breast reconstruction can be made possible by using a woman’s own tissue. A segment of the lower abdominal wall is used at times for this purpose. Other options include the back muscle and skin or a segment of the buttocks.

4. Breast Lift Surgery

Ptosis is a condition in which the skin of the breasts is not strong or resilient enough to support the breasts and they sag. In this condition, there is more skin tissue compared to breast tissue. This is a common happening in women post pregnancy characterized by drooping or slack breasts. This can be extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing, but the condition can easily be rectified. Breast lift surgery or mastopexy is aimed at removing the excess skin tissue, thus restoring the normal positioning of the breasts by elevating the breasts to a higher level.

The surgery is done under general anesthesia and is usually performed in combination with breast augmentation. The patient’s own excessive tissue can be used to in the Augmentation mammoplasty and elevating the breasts as a whole. Breast tissue along with the nipple-areola complex is lifted to a higher position. With time the suture line runs from the lower part of the areola to the breast crease becomes unnoticeable.

Breast lifts can be combined with body lifts or upper body lifts based in the patient’s desire. But it also causes few short term side effects like numbness, swelling and bruising which usually subside within the first three weeks.
